Be sure to get your parents permission before trying this experiment - you might need their help in finding the parts for this one too!
This experiment is just to make make observations. Nothing else is accomplished, but it can teach you some important facts relating to evolution.
Supplies Needed:
1) Small container with lid (cottage cheese container or similar - smaller is o.k.)
2) Several old watches (ask your parents if they have an old watch that is broken which you can have)
3) Other small parts - Screws, springs, etc..
Performing the Experiment
1) Place all parts into the small container and put the lid on it
2) Shake the parts for awhile (till you get tired of shaking them)
3) Open the container and look at the condition of the parts
Note the following about the parts in the container:
1) Are they in better condition or worse?
2) How long would you have to keep shaking the parts until you had a working watch inside?
3) What would happen to the parts if you shook them longer? Would they be in better shape or worse?
4) Evolution says that all the "parts" for living matter existed on the earth and that by chance (shaking) they were assembled into small living creatures (and eventually you and me)
