Be sure to get your parents permission before beginning this experiment - plus they may want to join you!

For over 100 years scientists have been telling us that the layers we see, at places like the "Grand Canyon" and often along roadsides where construction crews have cut through hills, were formed by millions of years of dirt and sediment settling to the ground and hardening.

But in this experiment you will see that it happens very rapidly!

Supplies Needed:

1) Clear plastic gallon Milk Jug (or clear 2 liter bottle)
2) 1-2 cups sand
3) 1-2 cups gravel
4) 1 cup dirt
5) 1/2 gallon water

Project Directions

1) Fill your plastic container with the sand, gravel and dirt (you can use all sorts of dirt from your yard)
2) Fill the bottle with water and put the cap on tightly
3) Take the bottle outside (just in case it leaks) and shake it hard until everything is mixed up.
4) Sit the bottle down and let it rest for 1/2 hour.

You will see the dirt, sand and rocks settling out into layers almost immediately, the longer you let it sit still, the more layers will appear and the water will get clear on top (this could take a few days). But you will see how water can make layers very rapidly.
