1) This means that things were dying before Adam sinned in the garden of eden, but the Bible says:
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned--
This means that before Adam sinned there was NO DEATH in the world - none at all!
2) How can days mean something other than days when it is the first time the word is used. Later on God draws a picture for us when He says:
2 Peter 3:8
. . . with the Lord one day is as a thousand years,
and a thousand years as one day.
This gives us the idea that God is outside of time, but He could not give us this picture of what He is like, unless we already understood what a day was.
3) Whenever the word "day" is used in the Old Testament along with a number or the phrase "evening and morning." it always means a typical 24 hour day. Just like we are used to. In the Creation story God uses both when He says:
Genesis 1:5
God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night.
So the evening and the morning were the first day.
God also reminds us again in Exodus how long He took to make everything:
Exodus 20:11
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea,
and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day . . .
The most important question though is "do you believe God?"
